In the beginning, Sam and Derek were babies, so they didn’t really know each other. Fast forward a bit: Sam and Derek won the Richard Rodgers Award for their musical UNLOCK’D, as well as “Best in the Fest” at NYMF. Back up: They met at the NYU Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. Back up a little further. Oops, too far: They’re babies again. Moving forward…yes…here we are: By the end of the first decade of the 21st century, their work had been performed in concert by much of the cast of HAIR. Their musical UNLOCK’D had been workshopped at Ravinia and TheatreWorks Palo Alto, and they were finishing the children’s musical THE GREAT COOKIE QUEST and the song cycle ISLAND SONG. Sam had taught several courses at Yale and NYU, and Derek had founded the rock band M-LAB for which he played keyboard and wore eyeliner. Fast forward some more. Teaching. Glamor. MAC Nominations. Glamor. Shows. More shows. Bang! So sad. The collision of the Andromeda Galaxy with the Milky Way in 3,000,000,000 AD ended the runs of nearly all of their shows, except that one that was on tour.
