Meet the Bloggers: Nathan Christensen
This fall, The Green Room is thrilled to welcome a fantastic group of new bloggers to our team. For the rest of the week, you can get to know them through our Meet the Bloggers series.
Name: Nathan Christensen
What do you do outside of blogging? I am a bookwriter/lyricist who also produces theater and events in Oklahoma and creates marketing content for UncommonGoods.com.
Favorite musical: I’m pretty partial to Into the Woods. I saw it on PBS as a child, and it transformed the way I look at the world. Suddenly I was able to understand things like how nice is different than good, and how everyone experiences the same event differently. It’s an extraordinary piece of work, in both craft and content.
What are you interested in blogging about this fall? I’m going to be focusing on the experience of writing musicals outside of NYC, what kind of opportunities there are, and how to define success without a Broadway show. I also really enjoy talking about the craft of musical writing, and maybe in the future could write about things like bookwriting and lyric analysis.
What are your non-theater interests? I play violin in a symphony orchestra, have taught songwriting in the NY public schools, co-founded an exotic fruit company, am the board president of a 100-year-old music club, created a large-scale game that was played over an entire downtown area, have fostered 20 children over the last year, have the same
job as Elaine from Seinfeld, and for 12 years have hosted an annual celebration in honor of Miracle Mike the Headless Chicken.
Favorite NMT song: One that I love is Subway Song by Nathan Tysen and Chris Miller. The specificity of the details chosen in that lyric add up to create a character who feels incredibly real, and the words themselves are chosen with lots of wonderful, hard edges, like k and t, that help communicate his inner frustration even while the music is outwardly mellow.
