10 New Musical Theatre Songs about Friendship
Musical theater is full of great love stories. It’s a great genre for that because with big feelings come big voices and epic high notes. But big feelings aren’t exclusively reserved for soulmates, right? Or, to put it another way, there’s more than one kind of love. These songs are for everyone who wants to sing with and/or about their friends. (Stream the whole playlist here.)
FREEDOM – Kerrigan-Lowdermilk
The quintessential NMT friendship duet. I encourage you to blast it the next time you’re on a road trip with your BFF.
BE MY FRIEND (THE FACEBOOK SONG) – Pasek & Paul
This song is at least 5 years old and though Facebook has had many incarnations since then, the song holds up. “Though I don’t like you, we’ll pretend that we’re close”: true friendship in the digital age.
SARAH FITCHNER – Ryan Scott Oliver
You’re probably familiar with RSO’s other song about someone named Sara(h), which can only be described as an anti-friendship song. “Sarah Fitchner,” though, is about a girl who tries to make friends and the lessons she learns in the process.
WE’RE JUST FRIENDS – Salzman and Cunningham
This is a friendship song that may or may not actually be about friendship. (You maaaay want to wear headphones if you’re at work.)
THE BRO DUET – Alexander Sage Oyen
The Bro answer to “We’re Just Friends.” George Salazar and Jason Gotay are the most charming.
MY THREE BEST FRIENDS – Nick Blaemire
Will, excited to reunite with his best friends from growing up, explains what they all meant to each other in high school. I feel like I know them well by the end of the song.
MY BEST FRIEND – Jonathan Reid Gealt
Another song about childhood friends all grown up, “My Best Friend” actually shows the friends’ reunion happening. We change but do we really change? Here’s what these two friends would answer:
SONYA ALONE – Dave Malloy
Sonya sings this about her cousin and closest friend Natasha. It’s hard to watch your friend going down a path that you know will only hurt her in the end. “Sonya Alone” captures that feeling perfectly, and Brittain Ashford’s performance is heartbreaking.
PARTY HAT – Joe Iconis
I never said both friends had to be human. That is all.
SORT-OF FAIRY TALE – Adam Gwon
I love how Warren applies romantic imagery to making friends. Because isn’t that the point of this whole playlist? That friendship stories are just as valid as love stories? Warren, I admire your spirit.
