Mindi Dickstein wrote the lyrics for the Broadway musical LITTLE WOMEN, which received Tony and Drama Desk nominations and continues to be produced worldwide through Music Theater International. Her songs have been performed widely, most notably as part of Lincoln Center's American Songbook ("Hear and Now: Contemporary Lyricists”) and in concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. She has a number of new projects in the works including lyrics for a musical based on the movie BENNY & JOON, with music by Nolan Gasser and book by Kirsten Guenther, and lyrics for a musical based on the novel SNOW IN AUGUST, with music by Peter Melnick and book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
Recent work includes the book for A WIND IN THE WILLOWS CHRISTMAS, with music by Mike Reid and lyrics by Sarah Schlesinger, commissioned and produced by the Two River Theater and named one of the top holiday musicals in the country by BroadwayWorld.com, and book for TOY STORY -- THE MUSICAL, with songs by Brendan Milburn and Valerie Vigoda (Groovelily), for Disney Creative Entertainment.
Mindi has written book and lyrics for a number of shows with music by long-time collaborator Daniel Messé, including the original musicals TRIP, commissioned by Playwrights Horizons, BEASTS AND SAINTS (Boston Music Theater Project, ASCAP Workshop, MTW's Fresh Voices) and THE MAGIC COOKIE, a ten-minute musical (New York Theater Workshop), as well as several musicals commissioned and produced by the nationally acclaimed Theatreworks USA, including NATE THE GREAT and THE MYSTERY OF KING TUT. She also wrote book and lyrics for NOTES ACROSS A SMALL POND (The Bridewell Theater, London), libretto for THE FALLING MAN, an opera in 13 minutes (Cucaracha Theater); and the plays THE EXISTENTIAL GOURMET, a tragicomedy (The Women's Project) and GUADELOUPE, a farce (Westbeth Theater Center).
Among the awards and honors Mindi has received are the Jonathan Larson Foundation Award, Massachusetts Artists Foundation Playwriting Fellowship, New York Foundation for the Arts Playwriting Fellowships, ASCAP Bernice Cohen Award, Second Stage Constance Klinsky Award for Excellence in Musical Theater, and a PEN International New Playwright Award (selected by Wendy Wasserstein). Mindi received her MFA from New York University's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, where she was an Oscar Hammerstein Fellow and where she now serves on the faculty.
