10 NMT Songs to Make You Laugh
Comedy is all about misdirection, and that’s why musical theatre is such a great medium for telling funny stories. Music can prepare an audience to hear one story, and then be completely surprised at the outcome. Having a melody or a well-placed rhyme deliver the punchline makes a joke land that much harder than it normally would. Music has a way of letting you get away with saying things you normally couldn’t, and theatre composers can take advantage of that. NMT writers know that they have all the tools to tell great stories and get a few laughs, and they’ve written the songs to prove it. Here are just a few of my favorite comedic songs:
1. “Fine” – Adam Gwon
This song perfectly captures those ridiculous fights you have with people you love. (Also, it’s cute.)
2. “Jeff” – Joe Iconis
This song will get stuck in your head, but you might want to be careful about where you sing it.
3. “Wall Lovin’” – Carner & Gregor
This is another one of those songs that probably isn’t going to go the way you think it is (but I think you’ll like it).
4. “Along the Way” – Pasek & Paul
Because what’s funnier than other people’s embarrassing stories? (Spoiler: there might also be an emotional sucker punch at the end, because that’s how I roll.)
5. “In Short” – Pasek and Paul
If you don’t have a crazy ex, you might just be the crazy ex.
6. “Taylor the Latte Boy” – Goldrich & Heisler
Speaking of people who are crazy in love…
7. A Little Bit” – Drew Gasparini
Admitting something to your parents is scary and tricky and sometimes, hilarious.
8. “Velociraptor” – Joe Iconis
Because sometimes you just feel like a 75 million-year-old reptile.
9. “Joey is a Punk Rocker” – Joe Iconis
Because love is unpredictable and ridiculous, in the funniest of ways.
10. “Vegas” – Kerrigan-Lowdermilk
In which two friends’ trip to the big city takes some wild (and hilarious) turns.
