Meet the Bloggers: David Brush

This fall, The Green Room is thrilled to welcome a fantastic group of new bloggers to our team. For the rest of the week, you can get to know them through our Meet the Bloggers series.

Name: David Brush

What do you do outside of blogging? I am a writer, lyricist, librettist, director, music director, producer, dramaturg and any of a host of other musical theatre related jobs. As producer, I produced Off-Broadway’s HOT MESS IN MANHATTAN and regional/developmental productions of PUMP UP THE VOLUME, THE CONSEQUENCES, and SPRING AWAKENING. As director: NEXT THING YOU KNOW (developmental), RENT, 35MM: A MUSICAL EXHIBITION (festival), THE LAST FIVE YEARS, TICK..TICK..BOOM! among others. As writer: SUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIER ( with Jim Farley, Composer – American Harmony Prize Finalist, Chicago Stages Finalist), THE BIG PICTURE, A HIGHER PLACE (with Amy & Steve Leigh), and currently developing LIVING ROOM (with composer Rachel Dean – developed out of a program with New York Public Library). I am currently an MA candidate with Regent University as well as having assisted in the development of over 15 new musicals. I was the co-founder and Artistic Director for Encore Theater Company and co-host of MusicalWorld podcast. Most importantly, I am the husband to Kris and the father to Noah.

Favorite musical: On the grounds that this question is simply too difficult to answer, I cannot choose just one. However, from the golden age, it doesn’t get much more perfect than WEST SIDE STORY. Contemporary Broadway? I was challenged and moved by NEXT TO NORMAL. And from the NEW Golden Age (let’s coin that term!), it’s hard to beat a great production of Adam Gwon’s ORDINARY DAYS.

What are you interested in blogging about this fall? Because I have spent so much time championing new musical theatre writers in various ways, I want to partly use this blog to champion the theatres, forums, and the artists who are taking the bold risks to present these new works to audiences all over the country. Musical Theatre has and always will be an “emerging” artform and those people who support it should be celebrated.

What are your non-theater interests? My family is the great joy of my life – so my wife and I are constantly traveling from school events, museums, zoos and soccer games and I couldn’t be happier. Also, (and with only the slightest bit of shame) I am an avid binge-watcher (House Of Cards, anyone?) and a self-proclaimed foodie. If I were not doing what I am doing, I would fully plan to BE Anthony Bourdain when I grow up.

Favorite NMT song: Again, difficult to answer…can’t choose one. Like so many people I know, I can never get enough of Kerrigan-Lowdermilk’s “Five And Half Minutes” and Carner and Gregor’s “After Hours.” Both songs represent a near-perfect marriage of music and lyric. It sure doesn’t hurt that these writers are also just great people, too.
