Meet the Bloggers: Samia Omari

The Green Room is thrilled to introduce you to our newest bloggers who are joining us this spring. For the rest of the week, you can get to know them through the latest installments of our Meet the Bloggers series.

Name: Samia Omari

What do you do outside of blogging? I’m currently training in musical theater and acting in Paris and rehearsing on one contemporary play and one musical in French. The contemporary musical theater scene is getting bigger here with open mics and opportunities to get involved in theater projects! I also make sure I hop on a train to London once or twice a year to check out new musicals that opened on the West End.

Favorite musical: I’ve been equally obsessed with 3 musicals for about 2 years. By that I mean that their songs are on perpetual replay on my iPod and I was literally moved to tears or went through a rollercoaster of emotions ranging from laughter to strong empathy for the characters.

  • The Book of Mormon is to me one the most daring and witty piece to date and got me laughing non-stop for 2 hours and a half. Everything from the music to the storyline and timing is unbelievably good.
  • A Chorus Line. Marvin Hamlisch’s music always strongly resonates with me and I’m just amazed by the truthfulness and brutal honesty that resulted from the creation workshop and actors sharing their life story.
  • And finally, Pippin for its incredible staging, plot and the overall immersive performance experience that draws the audience in.

What are you interested in blogging about this spring? I’d love to explore anything from reflecting on the journey as a performer to discussing specific pieces of the contemporary repertory, its relatability and contribution to musical theater, or how it greatly serves the performer as strong acting material.

What are your non-theater interests? Anything encompassing creativity or imagination: dancing, drawing, writing… I find that any of these mediums help me to grow as a performer and that’s one of the reasons why I’m excited to blog about musical theater. I love traveling as well, but some kind of theatergoing experience always ends up being involved!

Favorite contemporary MT song: My favorite song is the first contemporary song I heard and fell in love with: Kooman & Dimond’s “Random Black Girl.” The lyrics, musical writing and timing are utterly great. And performed by Patina Miller, that piece reaches perfection. I’m in love with all of their songs as well as with Carner & Gregor’s Island Song, which I recently got to discover live.
