#NMTmashups
I met a man without a dollar to his name, who had no traits of any value but his smile. I met a man who had no yearn or claim to fame, who was content to let life pass him for a while. He kissed me right here, and he said:
He’s savin’ it for Jesus.
I can’t remember how this idea first came about, but I’ve been obsessed with trying to arrange a mash-up of “Stars and the Moon” from by Jason Robert Brown (I won’t embed that one because duh, you already know it) and “Savin’ It” by Carner and Gregor (which I did embed, but you should already know it too). I was so sure someone must have thought of it already and did a frantic YouTube search, but to no avail — and alas, I lack both the musical and verbally creative skill to do it myself. Despite all my years of performing in choirs with deeply fuzzy feelings about showtune medleys, all I know about arranging mash-ups myself I learned from that one scene in Pitch Perfect.
(This is not that scene, but that scene is not on YouTube, so deal.)
But I still couldn’t help thinking: what other musical theatre mash-ups could I come up with?
“Run Freedom Run” from Urinetown / “Run Away With Me” by Kerrigan-Lowdermilk
That freedom sun will shine someday
Get the car packed and throw me the key
“All The Wasted Time” from Parade / “All The Time In The World” by Thomson and Mann
I’ve been adventurin’ far and wide, nothing that I ain’t tried
And I never knew anything at all
“Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen / “Almost First Kiss” by Carner and Gregor
Is this the real life?
I don’t think my eyes are shut
“If I Were A Bell” from Guys and Dolls / “I’m Sorry” by Kerrigan-Lowdermilk
I never spoke a word ’til spoken to, I never hurt a fly
So ask me how do I feel, little me with my quiet upbringing
“Belle (Reprise)” from Beauty and the Beast / “On Monday” by Ryan Scott Oliver
I want adventure in the great wide somewhere
You wouldn’t let me take you, wouldn’t let me take you, wouldn’t let me take you away
“We Go Together” from Grease / “All Of My Friends” by Drew Fornarola
We go together like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong
All of my friends are whores
(If you think I spelled that wrong, take it up with Google.)
“Oklahoma” from Oklahoma! / “Olivia” by Peter Mills
(Apparently this song is not on YouTube, which is a travesty because it is gorgeous. Get on it, ladies.)
OOOOOK!livia, be my love
Admittedly, these are pretty obvious picks. So hey, let’s hear yours. Get creative. And post it on YouTube so I can paw at my screen and weep from envy of your awesomeness.
Honorable mention: I tried so hard to make a mash-up of “I Feel Pretty” and “Pretty Funny” work, but it just got too depressing. Have this one instead.
