The Definitive Ranking of the NYC Audition Studios

The Definitive Ranking of the NYC Audition Studios

I’m about to say something that no actor has ever admitted out loud: Auditioning is hard, you guys. Sure, I know it’s difficult to believe, but waking up at 5 AM and standing in a line on the street with disgruntled actors while being gawked at by German tourists to hopefully get the opportunity to sing 16 bars of “Out There” at a table of homosexuals (and the women who love them) can sometimes be trying. It almost makes you want to give up. But do you want to know why we don’t? Because of the audition studios.

Is Theatre Criticism Dead?

Dear Theatre Critics,

July has been a dark month for you. It seems you can say nothing right! After years of artists cowering in fear of what you might say about them, artists are standing up for themselves (and for each other) to call you out on the way you abuse the hand that feeds you.

This past Sunday, I was fortunate enough to be able to see my friends performing in Broadway Rocks Kelly Clarkson at Feinstein’s/54 Below. Produced by my friend, Brandon Beynon (#beynton), it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. Not only is Kelly Clarkson a fierce singer, she’s also a fierce songwriter. There is […]

A while ago, I was surfing through Buzzfeed and ran across an amazing article called “Yes and…No. Standing Up To Sexual Harassment And Assault In L.A.’s Comedy Scene.” This is a beautiful, inspiring article on how a group of female comedians stood up against sexual assault and harassment in their industry and won. I started thinking […]

The Harmony of Politics and Musical Theatre

A month ago I was able to have the extremely fortunate experience of sitting next to my partner in the Richard Rodgers Theater while watching the first President of the United States sing only to be followed by hearing the current President of the United States speak. Of course, George Washington wasn’t really on stage. […]

BC Beat: Where The Community Lives

I am sitting in a dark corner of Cielo, a club in the West Village whose twitter proudly proclaims it as “WHERE HOUSE MUSIC LIVES!!” But it’s midday. The sun shines in through an open door. And there’s definitely no house music. Instead, there are five dancers rehearsing a narrative dance piece based on the […]

It’s Time to Stop “Show-Shaming”

I consider myself to be a burgeoning musical theatre expert- I mean come on, I’m spending two years of my life getting a masters degree in it. I will be honest with you all: I finally sat down and listened to the full recording of Bridges of Madison County the other day, and (whispers) I […]

Hedger, Nicholson and New Musical Theatre in Australia

Since the European discovery and settlement of Australia, our environment has been known as a harsh landscape, a place where it takes a lot of effort to make anything grow. This description holds true not only in our farming but also in our embrace of arts and culture, where small groups of people must constantly […]

On Bootlegs, Broadway and Breaking Barriers

Bootleg. What a simple, unassuming term. The child of the words boot and leg, all she wants to do in life is to perform her duty of giving us very low quality audio and video recordings of popular Broadway shows, but there are people out there who seek to destroy her humble goal: to combat […]

Since the news broke last week that Cafe Edison will close this year, I’ve seen my social media streams flood with posts in protest. I’m guilty of it too. Cafe Edison was (she writes, as if for an obituary) the place where my best friend and I went before every single pre-show dinner in high school. […]

All Theatre is Community Theatre

All theatre is community theatre. This is one of my favorite professor’s go-to phrases during class and one that has deeply resonated with me. I’ve had her for two semesters now so I can’t remember the first time I heard the phrase, but I do know that I immediately jotted it down on a piece […]

Every time you open a new play, or an old play in a new way, you run the risk of failure – and at the same time, the only chance of a creative success. A look back at the 2013-14 Broadway season might make you think that someone said that in response to the dearth […]

Mainstream Musicians Are Theater People, Too

Last week, Sara Bareilles did two sold-out concerts at Madison Square Garden. I was in attendance, as were countless others from the NMT community (based on the precise accuracy of Twitter and Instagram posts). It was an incredible show, as it always is when Sara Bareilles is involved, and it made me about five million times more excited […]

Broadway Belongs to Me

I’ve seen Forbidden Broadway three times and I’ve always admired it. I may be a lyricist but I am not the gal you call if you want a punny, delightful, rhyme-bursting parody lyric. No, I am the Salieri to Gerard Alessandrini’s Amadeus. I love Forbidden Broadway as only one can who fully understands how it’s […]

In my last post I talked about how theatre is produced in Germany for the most part, how our government and the states and cities fund what artists to in theatres. I also mentioned that this could – in a way – be influenced by how proud we (sometimes) still are to be the country of Goethe […]
