WRITER SPOTLIGHT: Jeff Blumenkrantz

This September, NMT is putting a spotlight on its writers. Each day, we’ll be featuring one writer or writing team’s recommended audition songs and audition tips – and sharing a discount code for their one-day-only Spotlight Sale! Today, we feature the music of Jeff Blumenkrantz! Jeff is an actor as well as a writer – he recently starred in Murder For Two off-Broadway – and you’ll definitely want to read Jeff’s recent interview.

TODAY, September 18, only: use the code MONTHUPONATIME to get 20% off all songs from Jeff Blumenkrantz’s new song cycle, Month Upon A Time

Favorite audition tip: It’s not about how well you sing. It’s about how well you tell a story.

Recommended female audition song: MY HEART WAS SET ON YOU

Make sure your accompanist gets exactly how briskly this song moves at the start. And maybe circle all the tempo/feel changes so they see them coming.

Recommended male audition song: HOLD MY HAND

Note the progression in the lyric: guy/fool/chump. These words, as well as the list in the last line, betray the profound insecurity of the character singing. But they also display his sense of humor. Avoid self-pity as much as possible.
