The Definitive Ranking of the NYC Audition Studios

The Definitive Ranking of the NYC Audition Studios

I’m about to say something that no actor has ever admitted out loud: Auditioning is hard, you guys. Sure, I know it’s difficult to believe, but waking up at 5 AM and standing in a line on the street with disgruntled actors while being gawked at by German tourists to hopefully get the opportunity to sing 16 bars of “Out There” at a table of homosexuals (and the women who love them) can sometimes be trying. It almost makes you want to give up. But do you want to know why we don’t? Because of the audition studios.

Is Theatre Criticism Dead?

Dear Theatre Critics,

July has been a dark month for you. It seems you can say nothing right! After years of artists cowering in fear of what you might say about them, artists are standing up for themselves (and for each other) to call you out on the way you abuse the hand that feeds you.

When we talk about accessibility in theatre, the conversation invariably strays towards the ever-increasing price of theatre tickets, rendering the experience of seeing professional theatre in New York largely untenable for the majority of tourists and residents alike. We all know theatre is too expensive and ticket prices should be reduced for the sake of […]

#ServerLife Everyone should work in the hospitality industry so that we can all share the common experience of how much it sucks. Almost three years ago, I started working at a restaurant in Jersey where I met a girl who told me that her cousin worked at the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF). Of […]

The buzz surrounding Lin Manuel-Miranda’s Hamilton is deservedly not quieting down anytime soon, yet the spring season of new musicals is upon us – and there aren’t any slackers among them. #OscarsSoWhite and Representation on Broadway in 2016

Recently, one of the biggest topics in the media has been the lack of racial representation in this year’s Academy Awards. This is the second year in the row in which the nominees in the acting categories are all caucasian. Many people think there should be more representation in these awards, while others argue that […]

What’s My Deal With All The “Hamilton” Videos?

This post originally appeared on hesherman.com. Republished with permission.  If you’re a dedicated fan of the musical Hamilton, or if you follow me on social media, you may well have come across the streetside #Ham4Ham show videos I’ve been sharing since late July. As one year closes and another opens, I always find myself mulling through the Playbill.com projected openings for what I might expect in the coming theatre seasons. Following a year filled with family tragicomedy, Gene Kelly stunners, and rapping presidents, 2016 has a lot to live up to. So, here are some of the 2016 […]

As a writer, it is very difficult to try and find actors who are not only interested in your work but are interested in you as a person. Being that I'm recently single, there are moments of weakness, moments when I long for a little bit of companionship, and here is my lesson (#lessont or […]

The 7 Best NYC Historical Sites Referenced in Musical Theatre

This week’s blog is inspired, as everything is these days, by Hamilton. I recently discovered a historic gem in my own neighborhood and was thrilled to find out it had ties to everyone’s favorite contemporary musical. Then I began to realize that NYC is the birthplace not just of American Musical Theatre, but also of […]

Spring Awakening is back on Broadway this fall with a newly imagined production by the Los Angeles-based company Deaf West Theatre. I’m here with a friendly reminder that this production exists and to tell you a little bit more about what makes it so important. For some context, Deaf West was founded by Ed Waterstreet […]

8 Broadway Revivals I Want to See

Musical revivals are fun for so many reasons. They can either bring back a classical show in its original staging, which gives younger generations a chance to experience a classic production (like 2011’s Anything Goes revival), or they can update it for today’s audience and put a fresh spin to it (like the 2013 revival […]
