Playlist: 7 Relationships Through Songs

One of the things I appreciate most about musical theatre is the way different types of relationships are explored. There are songs that sum up moments and feelings in our lives, no matter how big or how small those moments and feelings are. Through musical theatre songs, we can begin to understand the power of our interactions with each other or even with ourselves. Here are some of my favorite musical theatre songs that explore different kinds of relationships:

1. “Give Words of Love” by Zoe Sarnak

This is a beautiful song that comes from those moments that you may feel down or questioning yourself. I feel this song is about remembering to give words of love to yourself. The relationship we have with ourselves is the most important one to have.

2. “Freedom” from The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown by Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk

This is a fun song about finding freedom from what’s holding you back. It’s also about your relationship with your best friend.

3. “Leave Me Alone” from Side Show by Bill Russell and Henry Krieger

I think that if you have siblings, you can relate to this song. Your siblings are always going to call you out on things and argue with you to the point where you can’t stand them. In the end, you still love each other and will be there for each other.

4. “Dear Lucy / Dear Tom” by Drew Gasparini

The charm of this song combined with the talent of the performers in this video makes it one of my favorites. With a great storytelling format through letters, it is a sweet story about first love.

5. “I’ll Cover You” from Rent by Jonathan Larson

When I think of love, this is one of the songs I think of. Angel and Collins not only love each other unconditionally but they also support each other like a team.

6. “Therapy” from tick…tick…BOOM by Jonathan Larson

I love the way this is performed by Miranda and Olivo. I like how the rhythm begins to match the argument. I think this song gives insight to the way we view our relationships: one person may view a moment one way, and the other person sees it as the complete opposite.

7. “Light” from Next To Normal by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey

This song sums up how no matter what we go through in life, there will be hope. We go through different relationships and issues, both high and low, but we can get through them. The relationships in our lives can bring us some light.
