The Definitive Ranking of the NYC Audition Studios

The Definitive Ranking of the NYC Audition Studios

I’m about to say something that no actor has ever admitted out loud: Auditioning is hard, you guys. Sure, I know it’s difficult to believe, but waking up at 5 AM and standing in a line on the street with disgruntled actors while being gawked at by German tourists to hopefully get the opportunity to sing 16 bars of “Out There” at a table of homosexuals (and the women who love them) can sometimes be trying. It almost makes you want to give up. But do you want to know why we don’t? Because of the audition studios.

The Ultimate 10-Minute Vocal Warm Up for Dancers

As I’ve written about before, warm-ups are important for any performer – physically and vocally. Whether you consider yourself a singer, a dancer, an actor or a combination thereof, it is essential to make sure your body is prepared for anything that might be thrown your way. Starting out as a dancer, I was very […]

Actor Audition Etiquette: 3 Mistakes to Avoid

We talk a ton these days about audience etiquette, but what we don’t discuss is actor etiquette. Not at shows, of course. Hopefully, knowing what goes into the making of a show keeps any actor from being a disrespectful audience member. But what about actor etiquette at auditions? It’s the height of audition season, and […]

7 “Top 40” Songs for Your Audition Book

Having witnessed my fair share of musical theatre auditions, I've come to realize that it's a lot harder to choose a contemporary pop song to present than we may assume. I see a lot of actors gravitate towards older pop anthems like "Total Eclipse of the Heart," and while potentially riveting, the choice does feel […]

By the time you leave high school choir and drama and enter into your college program, ideally, there’s a list of songs (and monologues) you should have already covered: “On My Own,” “Corner of the Sky,” “Where Is Love,” just to name a few. But then at the same time, due to your age and […]

When it comes to the art of auditioning, there’s a ton we could focus on and discuss. However, you probably know most of the tricks by now (how to fix your music, talk to the accompanist, dress, etc.). So what new insider info could there possibly be to trade? Glad you asked! How about we […]

16 of the Most Overdone Women’s Audition Songs

You know how there are some songs that the person ahead of you at an audition always seems to be singing? Don’t be the person who sings one of those. It doesn’t matter how awesome you sound or how great the song is – and so many of these songs are so great, that’s how they got to […]

As actors, our lives are consistently filled with standing in front of people and proving to them why we are the right person for the job. Auditioning is the true job of an actor.
